Hydra Groups
نویسنده
چکیده
We give examples of CAT(0), biautomatic, free–by–cyclic, one–relator groups which have finite–rank free subgroups of huge (Ackermannian) distortion. This leads to elementary examples of groups whose Dehn functions are similarly extravagant. This behaviour originates in manifestations of Hercules–versus–the–hydra battles in string– rewriting. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification: 20F65, 20F10, 20F67

Induction of secondary axis in hydra revisited: New insights into pattern formation
In 1909, several years before the famous `Organizer’ experiments of Spemann and Mangold, Ethel Browne demonstrated induction of a secondary axis in hydra by grafting a hypostome. Based on this and subsequent work, in the late sixties, Lewis Wolpert proposed the theory of morphogen gradients and positional information. We have studied secondary axis induction by hypostome and foot tissue using t...
متن کاملMortality patterns suggest lack of senescence in hydra.
Senescence, a deteriorative process that increases the probability of death of an organism with increasing chronological age, has been found in all metazoans where careful studies have been carried out. There has been much controversy, however, about the potential immortality of hydra, a solitary freshwater member of the phylum Cnidaria, one of the earliest diverging metazoan groups. Researcher...
متن کاملWhat Hydra can teach us about chemical ecology -how a simple, soft organism survives in a hostile aqueous environment.
Hydra and its fellow cnidarians - sea anemones, corals and jellyfish - are simple, mostly sessile animals that depend on bioactive chemicals for survival. In this review, we briefly describe what is known about the chemical armament of Hydra, and detail future research directions where Hydra can help illuminate major questions in chemical ecology, pharmacology, developmental biology and evoluti...
متن کاملConstraints on the relative sizes of the cell populations in Hydra attenuata.
The steady-state relative population sizes of the several cell populations in Hydra attenuata were examined. In contrast to the constant average population size ratios between groups of animals, these ratios vary within limits between individual animals within a group. By maintaining animals on different feeding regimes (number of shrimp larvae ingested per day), the steady-state population si...
متن کاملAckermannian Integer Compression and the Word Problem for Hydra Groups
For a finitely presented group, the word problem asks for an algorithm which declares whether or not words on the generators represent the identity. The Dehn function is a complexity measure of a direct attack on the word problem by applying the defining relations. Dison and Riley showed that a “hydra phenomenon” gives rise to novel groups with extremely fast growing (Ackermannian) Dehn functio...
